Maybe I’m too concerned about fashion, but there are shoes out there that are just as comfortable, and don’t make me look like I work in a hospital. I see people wear these every day and I cringe when they walk by. I guess they’re good for people maybe 70 and older who need orthotic shoes and cant wear sandals to the beach.

These clogs have been banned from hospitals in Sweden because they build up static that can interfere with hospital electronic equipment.

Also, Crocs contain dibutil tin that is very toxic to aquatic organisms! The German magazine Öko-test (5/2007) put them through some lab tests. Tin organic compounds have long been recognized for their negative impacts on health and environment. They are among other things detrimental to the immune and hormone systems of animals.

Comfortable?

So-So.

Hideously, embarrassingly, ugly?

You bet!

Also, they’re really hard to find in many colors, which tells me this is a fad which will soon be OVER….thank goodness!!!

Mine are never leaving my closet again…until I sell ‘em on Ebay in a few years as a “novelty”.

Avoid!

These are great shoes! I love them! My tootsies haven’t been so comfy in years! After my daughter and almost all her 10-year-old friends bought them in the kiddie colours (hers are a lovely light purple), I finally gave in and bought a pair in the Sage Green.

I don’t usually wear sandals, mostly because I’m self-conscious about my toes. They aren’t hideous or anything, I just don’t “do” anything to them, like extensive nail care, etc. So sue me: I have a baby and homeschool one of my older children. SOMETHING has to give, and toe care is it. :-)

So when I saw the “closed” yet breathable design of the crocs, I was hooked. PLUS, I usually don’t like slip-ons, but figured I wouldn’t mind their convenience for running outside to water the lawn, and I could always use the strap if I end up walking a longer distance.

Anyway, these shoes are WAY more than hype. Despite the loose fit, they stay on my feet, and they absorb shocks so there’s a bounce in my step like there hasn’t been in years.

The shoes are not that pretty to look at, but most of my other footwear tends to be on the “clunky” side so I wasn’t self-conscious about that… and it’s SO nice to skip the socks and not worry about my uncared-for toes!

So here’s my only question: so many vegetarians love non-leather shoes like Crocs, obviously because they spare animals the cruelty of being made into shoes.

However, the non-leather materials the shoes are made of – like the foamy plastic in Crocs – seems SO un-earth-friendly, I am not sure if it’s a reasonable trade-off.

While we may be sparing a few animals (I don’t even know about that, because ?I figure shoe leather probably comes from cows that are used for meat?), we are toxifying the ecosystem where WE and our children have to live, and while some cows may live nice long lives, I want my grandchildren to as well.

What made me think about this? Walking into the shoe store where I bought my Crocs about an hour after they’d received a brand-new shipment – just a few boxes. The place was toxic with plastic fumes! Unbelievable… I just ran in and out with my purchase; can’t imagine having to work there all day. And I certainly wouldn’t want to be in a factory producing the things.

So… I guess this is a mixed review. MY personal Crocs are great! They’re SO comfy! If you buy them, you won’t regret it, and I certainly don’t believe wearing plastic shoes will hurt me directly.

But – not being a vegetarian, and kinda caring about the earth and its future – I feel like maybe I should have bought a pair of Naot, Teva, Birkenstock or another, more planet-friendly brand of shoes instead.

I dunno.
